Once again it was the Soviet Union who were World Junior Champions, winning the 1984 tournament in Nykoping, Sweden with a record of 6-0-1. The only team that did not lose to the Soviets was Canada, who managed a 3-3 tie but could still finish no better than fourth with a record of 4-1-2. Following the USSR along the medal trail was Finland (silver) and Czechoslovakia (bronze). The Finns had a really good run for the title, but finished one point behind the Soviets with a record of 6-1-0. Finnish center Raimo Helminen set a World Junior Championship record that would last for many years when he recorded 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points in seven games. Not surprisingly, Helminen was named the Best Forward and earned a berth on the tournament All-Star Team. Allan Perry became the first American to claim a Directorate Honor at the World Junior Championships when he was named the tournament's Best Goalie despite his country's sixth-place finish.
