IIHF Men's Junior Under 20 World Hockey Championships
After two years, the Soviet Union got the gold medal back at the World Junior Championships in 1983. The team won all seven games on home ice in Leningrad, where the tournament had begun nine years before. The Soviets scored 50 goals while allowing only 13, as Ilja Byakin was named the tournament's Best Defenseman and earned a spot on the All-Star Team. Matti Rautiainen of Finland was named the Best Goalie, though Dominik Hasek earned the berth on the All-Star Team after helping Czechoslovakia earn the silver medal. Canada, led by Mario Lemieux, Dave Andreychuk and Steve Yzerman, finished third under the coaching of Dave King. Andreychuk (11 points) and Lemieux (10) each ranked among the scoring leaders, though the tournament's top scorer was Vladimir Ruzicka of Czechoslovakia with 12 goals and eight assists. However, Tomas Sandstrom of the fourth-place Swedes was tabbed as the tournament's Best Forward.
