IIHF Men's Junior Under 20 World Hockey Championships
Canada climbed on the world junior hockey throne in 1982, taking the gold medal with a record of 6-0-1 at the World Junior Championships in Minnesota. The team, coached by Dave King and Mike Keenan, beat the Soviets 7-0 en route to winning Canadian hockey's first world championship of any kind since the 1961 World Championship was won by the Trail Smoke Eaters. The Soviets slumped to fourth place this year, with Czechoslovakia (silver) and Finland (bronze) following Canada on the medal podium. The host Americans finished sixth. Defense made the difference for Canada, as Mike Moffat was named the Best Goalie and Gord Kluzak was tabbed at the Best Defenseman. Mike Mollar joined his teammates on the tournament All-Star Team after leading Canada with 14 points (five goals and nine assists). Leading the tournament was Finland's Raimo Summanen, who had seven goals and nine assists.
