IIHF Men's Junior Under 20 World Hockey Championships
The Soviet junior team won its fourth straight official World Junior Championship (and seventh in total with three unofficial championships) at Helsinki in 1980, with very hard one-goal wins over Finland and Sweden. The Soviets' incredible winning run has been beaten only by Canada in the 1990s. In 1980, however, Canada would settle for a fifth-place finish. Finland (silver) and Sweden (bronze) rounded out the medal winners, while Czechoslovakia finished fourth. The United States finished seventh in its first appearance at the official tournament. For the second year in a row, Vladimir Krutov was the tournament's top scorer with seven goals and four assists. Finland's Jari Kurri also had 11 points (four goals and seven assists), but it was Krutov who was named the Best Forward. Finns Reijo Ruotsalainen and Jari Paavola took honors as the best Defenseman and Best Goalie respectively.
