Herb Brooks

Herb Brooks gained fame as coach of the "Miracle on Ice" United States Olympic hockey team that defeated the Soviet Union at the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980 and went on to win the gold medal. He had been the last player cut from the 1960 United States Olympic squad that had won the gold medal in hockey at Squaw Valley in 1960. Brooks did later played on the U.S. Olympic team in 1964 and 1968 and on the U.S. National Team in 1962, 1965, 1967, and 1970, earning a bronze medal at the World Championships in 1962 and helping the Americans win the B-Pool in 1970.

Brooks was a collegiate player at the University of Minnesota from 1955 to 1959. He became coach at the school in 1972 and transformed the last-place Gophers into NCAA champions by 1974. Brooks led Minnesota to the NCAA title again in 1976 and 1979 before going on to guide the U.S. gold medal team. (He had also coached the Americans at the World Championships in 1959.) There was immediate speculation after Lake Placid that Brooks would coach the New York Rangers, but he wound up in Switzerland for a year before joining his former Olympic assistant Craig Patrick in New York. Brooks later coached the Minnesota North Stars and the New Jersey Devils. In 1995, he joined Craig Patrick again as a scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Brooks coached the Olympic hockey team from France at the Nagano Games in 1998.
