Mikael Renberg played two seasons with Pitea in the Swedish second division before moving up to Lulea in 1990-91. He represented Sweden at the World Junior Championships in 1992 and was named to the all-star team after Sweden won a silver medal at the World Championship in 1993.
Renberg was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team after collecting 38 goals and 44 assists for Philadelphia in 1993-94 and was a member of the Flyers' "Legion of Doom" line with Eric Lindros and John LeClair until injuries slowed him down during the 1995-96 season. He was a member of the Flyers team that reached the Stanley Cup finals in 1997 and represented Sweden at the Nagano Olympics in 1998. Renberg then played in the 1998 World Championship helping Sweden win gold while finishing third in team scoring with five goals and three assists. He returned to the World Championship again in 2001 and won a bronze with team Sweden scoring four goals and three assists. Renberg also played for Team Sweden at the 2002 Olympics. He continued his success at the international level by winning a silver medal at the 2003 World Championship. |
