Mike Modano

Mike Modano was just the second American-born player ever to be selected first overall in the NHL Entry Draft when he was picked by the Minnesota North Stars in 1988. Five years earlier, the North Stars had made American Brian Lawton the number-one pick. Modano has gone on to star in both Minnesota and with the Dallas Stars, winning the Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999.

In international play, Modano represented the United States at the World Junior Championships in 1988 and 1989, finishing second behind fellow American Jeremy Roenick in scoring at the 1989 tournament with 15 points (six goals and nine assists). He played for the U.S. at the 1990 and 1993 World Championships and was tied for the team lead in scoring with Brett Hull (nine points) at the 1991 Canada Cup. Modano was a member of the American team that beat Canada at the World Cup of Hockey in 1996 and played for the U.S. Olympic team in Nagano in 1998. Modano returned to the Olympics with Team U.S.A. in 2002 and earned a silver medal while contributing six assists. Modano was again considered an integral part of Team USA at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and tied Keith Tkachuk for the team lead in points with six.
