Seth Martin

A longtime Canadian amateur star who would see NHL action with the St Louis Blues in 1967-68, Seth Martin was a member of the Trail Smoke Eaters when they became the last Canadian amateur team to win the World Championship in 1961. The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association had wanted to add a new goaltender to Trail's roster, but coach Bobby Kromm stuck with Martin and he allowed only six goals in the five games he played at the world event that year, posting a 1.28 goals-against average and being named the tournament's Best Goalie. He was particularly brilliant in Trail's 5--1 win over the Soviet Union in the final game, clinching the World Championship for Canada. Trail returned to the World Championships in 1963, and while Martin was again named the tournament's Best Goalie the Canadian team fell to fourth place.

By 1964, Canada had developed a National Team program and would use this team as its representative at international events. Martin became a member of the National Team and played at the Innsbruck Olympics in 1964 and at the World Championships again in 1966 and 1967, often sharing goaltending duties with Ken Broderick. Martin was named to the tournament All-Star Team in 1966 and was once again selected as the Best Goalie that year. He was the last Canadian goaltender to be so honored until Bill Ranford in 1994.
