| The highest-scoring U.S.-born defenseman in the history of the NHL, and just the fifth defenseman ever to top 1,000 points, Phil Housley entered the league in 1982-83 after the Buffalo Sabres selected him directly out of high school with the sixth pick overall in the 1982 Entry Draft. Housley has since played for the St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, New Jersey Devils, Washington Capitals, Chicago Blackhawks and a short stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
In international competition, Housley represented the United States at the 1982 World Junior Championship and at the World Championships in 1982, 1986, 1989 and 2000. He also played at the Canada Cup in 1984 and 1987 and was a member of the American team that beat Canada at the World Cup of Hockey in 1996. Housley returned to the international scene appearing with the silver winning Team U.S.A. at the 2002 Olympics where he led all U.S. defenseman in scoring.
Housley retired from professional hockey in January of 2004 as one of the most decorated U.S. born defenseman in history. |
