Led by the superb goaltending of Jack McCartan, the United States beat silver-medallist Canada 2-1 and the bronze-medallist Soviets 3-2 to take their first-ever-gold medal. Playing on home turf in Squaw Valley, California, the Americans recorded a perfect 7-0 mark to win the title. Key figures on their roster were forward John Mayasich and two sets of brothers, Roger and William Christian and Robert and William Cleary. It would be another 20 years before the Americans won Olympic gold. Ironically the last player cut at the 1960 training camp was Herb Brooks who later coached the 1980 US team to gold at Lake Placid.
