Tomas Johnsson


Born April 12, 1960 in Falun, Sweden. Defenseman Tomas Jonsson starred for two Swedish clubs - MoDo and Leksands IF in the national elite league in Sweden, winning one title in 1979 with MoDo and later earning "Player of the Year" in Sweden in 1995. He had a splendid career in the NHL from 1981 until 1989 suiting up for the New York Islanders and the Edmonton Oilers in a total of 552 regular season games. Jonsson's NHL career was highlighted by the two consecutive Stanley Cup titles he won while with the Islanders in 1982 and 1983. On a national team level, he appeared in 200 games for his native Sweden. Within those games Jonsson captured an Olympic gold medal in 1994 and another gold during the 1991 IIHF World Championship. He also won the IIHF World Championship silver medal in 1981, 1986, 1990 and 1995, a bronze medal in the 1979 IIHF World Championship and the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid.
