Sven Tumba


Born August 27, 1931, Sven Tumba (formerly named Johansson) was a star forward for Sweden. He participated in four Olympic Winter Games, winning one silver in 1964 in Innsbruck and one bronze medal in 1952 in Oslo. He also won the IIHF World Championship title three times: in 1953 in Switzerland, 1957 in Moscow, and 1962 in Colorado Springs. In his long career he participated in a total of 14 IIHF major tournaments. Between 1951-1969, Tumba represented Djurgarden in the Swedish Hockey League, winning eight national championship titles. During his career he played 245 national team games scoring 223 goals. A versatile athelete, he also represented Sweden in one national game in soccer. Sven Tumba was elected as best forward in the IIHF World Championships in 1957 and 1962, and was added to the IIHF Honour Roll in 1997.
