Vladimir Kostka


Born August 20, 1922 in Trebici, Czechoslovakia, Professor Vladimir Kostka starred as a forward in the Czechoslovakian league between 1938 and 1954. After his playing career was over, he became interested in coaching and joined the Czechoslovakian national team program in 1957. Under Kostka's guidance the national team became an international powerhouse, capturing numerous medals during the IIHF World Championships and Olympic Winter Games: the 1963 IIHF silver medal, 1964 Olympic and IIHF bronze, 1965 and 1966 IIHF silver, 1968 Olympic and IIHF bronze, 1969 and 1970 IIHF bronze, 1971 IIHF silver, 1972 Olympic bronze and finally the IIHF World Championship title in Prague in 1972. One year later in 1973 Kostka's team added one more IIHF bronze medal. Professor Vladimir Kostka also served as President of the Czechoslovakian Ice Hockey Federation from 1981 to 1988. He has published numerous books about ice hockey training and coaching and was a long time member of the IIHF Coaches Committee.
