W.A. Hewitt


William Hewitt was born May 15, 1875 in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. One of the greatest organizers of ice hockey in Canada, Hewitt led his nation's entry to the Olympic Winter Games in 1920, 1924, 1928 and 1936. The IIHF was so impressed by Hewitt's knowledge of the game that they gave him the honor of refereeing the first Olympic game - an 8-0 win by Sweden over Belgium on April 23, 1920. He served as IIHF President during the years 1925-26 and 1928-31. Bill was the father of Foster Hewitt, a renowned Canadian play-by-play broadcaster. William Hewitt died on September 8, 1966 in Toronto, Canada.
