In 1997-98, the Czech Republic Extraleague comprised 14 teams playing a quadruple round-robin, 52-game regular season. The top eight teams advance to the playoffs, where series are a best-of-five. In a promotion/relegation round, the two bottom teams from the Extraleague play a set of best-of-seven series against the two top teams from the First League. The First League also has 14 teams playing a quadruple round-robin schedule. The Second League has two divisions with 16 teams in each. The top juniors in the Czech Republic play in the Junior Extraleague, which consists of two divisions with 10 teams in each.
